Don’t Let Transnational Canal Destroy Fragile Ecosystems

Target: Daniel Ortega, President of Nicaragua

Goal: Stop building destructive and dangerous canal across the whole of Nicaragua.

Unique ecosystems and countless animal species are going to be put at terrible risk by a massive transnational canal connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans currently being built through Nicaragua, according to the project’s environmental review. Demand that this incredibly destructive industrial project be put to an end as soon as possible.

This project has been a subject of intense environmental concern for years. At long last, it appears as if those concerns are justified. According to the proposed canal’s environmental impact assessment, the project—proposed and being developed by the Hong Kong Nicaraguan Canal Development Group for no purpose other than increasing ocean shipping lanes—is in no uncertain terms entirely “scientifically indefensible.”

The scientists behind the environmental review are saying that such a canal would put the country’s main sources of water at imminent risk of salination and pollution, jeopardizing public health, animal food chains, and environmental wellbeing. Additionally, they are raising concerns about the canal’s impact on already-threatened species of animals in the region, including spider monkeys and jaguars, as well as countless other species who use Nicaragua as an annual migratory corridor.

With the ever-increasing effects of climate change on our world’s environment and wildlife, we need to be taking every measure we can to save them from destruction, not hasten its arrival. Still, despite this project’s environmental review, construction on it is underway. Sign the petition below to demand that this construction be ended once and for all.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Ortega,

I am writing you today regarding the canal currently being built across your country connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The environmental impact assessment of this project proved that it puts your country at much too great a risk for it to be created. Its construction needs to be halted as soon as possible.

Scientists have concluded that this project is putting your environment and wildlife at imminent danger—your water sources, jaguars, monkeys, and innumerable animal species that rely on your country’s land for their annual migrations will all be put in peril by this canal. Clean water, the environment, and these animals are already at huge risk, and this canal would just make them that much more imperiled.

And for what? Panama’s canal, the one yours is based on, has just recently expanded and can handle the existing amount of ocean shipping traffic. Many suspect your canal wouldn’t even be economically viable because of this.

This project is unjustifiable both economically and environmentally. I demand that you immediately cease construction on it once and for all so that it can never put your country’s citizens, wildlife, and environment at risk.

Sincerely,
