Target: New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio
Goal: Introduce widespread gender-neutral restrooms to accommodate all citizens.
In response to widespread bias and harassment, New York City may require businesses to mark single occupancy restrooms as gender-neutral, granting access for all citizens. New York City will not stand idly by as transgender and gender non-conforming residents continue to encounter basic, everyday struggles that often place them in harmful situations. Ask New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to push forward with plans to increase the availability of gender-neutral restrooms.
Transgender and gender non-conforming individuals have experienced harassment and in many cases, assault, for far too long. Often these cases occur in public restrooms, where gender non-conforming individuals will most likely encounter the greatest level of ignorance and opposition. Due to the ease of sharing experiences through technology and continuous media coverage, we are more aware of these atrocities than ever before.
A fix as simple as changing the signs on existing single occupancy bathrooms to reflect gender neutrality will go a long way in protecting the well-being of so many. It will significantly cut down on cases of harassment and assault in and around public restrooms. Every citizen should have the right to safely and comfortably use the restroom. This initiative will provide just that.
Please sign this petition to urge New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to accommodate and protect citizens by increasing the availability of gender-neutral restrooms.
Dear Mayor Blasio,
New York City is proposing an increase in gender-neutral restrooms to incorporate all transgender and gender non-conforming residents. An act as simple as changing signs on existing restrooms could have a significantly positive impact. This is a simple, extremely low-cost improvement to New York City restrooms that will go a long way in protecting citizens and decreasing discrimination.
Statistically, transgender and gender non-conforming individuals will experience a great deal of inconvenience, harassment, and possibly worse, while attempting an act as simple as using the restroom. Many have conveyed deep-rooted anxiety and total avoidance of public restrooms. Luckily, there are things that can be done to ease these fears and ensure all citizens are able to use the restroom without a second thought.
The introduction of widespread gender-neutral restrooms by simply changing signs on existing restrooms is a no-brainer. The initiative is cost-effective and, most importantly, increases the safety and well-being of New York City residents.
Please enforce these changes and take a stand for citizens of all genders.
