Target: President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan
Goal: Don’t raise electricity prices in Armenia to cover the corrupt spending by Electric Networks of Armenia (ENA).
Electricity bills are soaring in Armenia to cover the luxury homes and cars of company executives. Thousands of residents are protesting the considerable electricity price hike that is to be implemented by the Armenian government. The cause for the increase in electricity prices in Armenia are allegedly to cover the bankruptcy of Electric Networks of Armenia (ENA), which stems from corrupt lavish spending on executives. The citizens of Armenia should not be made to pay for the company’s mistakes.
Thousands of protesters marched toward the president’s residency in Yerevan only to have riot police disperse the march with water cannons and arrest hundreds of demonstrators. Despite police hindrances, the protesters continue to persevere and to demonstrate on the city streets. Although the President of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan, suspended the energy hike for a short while to encourage dispersal of the protestors, the electricity price hike agenda is still in consideration.
The electricity price increase is to be 17-22 percent. The main company behind the push for the price hike is ENA, a Russian-owned energy company. ENA accumulated more than $220 million in debt and urged the Armenian government to increase electricity prices so that they can pay the government back to prevent company bankruptcy. It was discovered that most of the debt came from excessive spending on homes and luxury cars for Russian executives. Along with these reasons, the protesters are also demonstrating because they are angry about the years of alleged corruption and irresponsibility within the Armenian government.
By signing the petition below, you are urging the Armenian president to terminate the agenda to increase electricity prices. The Armenian residents should not be made to pay for a company’s mistakes.
Dear President Serzh Sargsyan,
I am writing to you to talk about the recent public conflict in Armenia regarding the decision to increase electricity prices. Thousands of protestors have demonstrated near your residence in Yerevan to protest the decision to increase electricity prices by 17-22%. As was investigated, the decision to increase the electricity prices allegedly stems from Electric Networks of Armenia (ENA) being in debt, from spending excessive amounts of money on Russian executives.
Please terminate the decision to increase electricity prices in Armenia. The citizens of Armenia have shown their great dissent towards the unfair decision, and they should not be punished by paying more for a company’s spending mistakes.
