Ban Harmful Plastic Microbeads in Bath Products

Target: Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy

Goal: Ban products with harmful plastic microbeads in the state of Connecticut.

Plastic microbeads are pouring into our marine ecosystems at an incredible rate, harming both fish and eventually humans. When using products with plastic microbreads in them like face washes and body scrubs, we do not think about where these beads go and what effect they will have on the environment once they wash down the drain. Researches have estimated that a single product can contain as many as 350,000 plastic microbeads.

Unfortunately, these beads end up in lakes, rivers, and oceans, and then they stay there. The microbreads are not biodegradable so fish consume them and their bodies absorb the chemicals in the beads. The chemicals move up the foodchain when fish are consumed by larger fish. Ultimately, the chemicals will be brought to humans through the food chain. The health of our bodies of water is also in jeopardy as long as we continue to use plastic microbead products. The Long Island Sound, in particular, is effected by plastic microbreads.

Sign this petition to protect organisms and ourselves from being exposed to the chemicals and the buildup of plastic microbreads in our water bodies by banning products with microbeads in them.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy,

I am writing this petition letter to you to urge you to introduce legislation that bans products with plastic microbeads in them. Researchers have estimated that as many as 350,000 plastic microbreads can be in a single product. These plastic microbreads have devastating effects on the environment and the organisms and people surrounding it. When the plastic microbeads are washed down the drain, they end up in bodies of water and the chemicals inside the plastic microbeads move up the food chain to humans when we consume fish.

Banning microbeads in the state of Connecticut will improve the health of our rivers, lakes, and especially the Long Island Sound. It can potentially prevent toxins and chemicals from leaching into our bodies from the seafood that we eat. Banning these plastic microbeads will benefit the environment, organisms in bodies of water, and people.

Environmental issues are extremely important to your constituents. They will vote for candidates who support policies that protect the earth. I am sure that if you enact legislation regarding the banning of the these harmful plastic microbreads, they will be extremely grateful and will remember what you have done for the environment during election time.

Sincerely,
