Target: Mr. Anthony Kennedy, United States Supreme Court Justice and Majority Opinion Author
Goal: Praise the nationwide legalization of same-sex marriage.
After years of struggle, activism, dedication, and love, same-sex marriage has finally been effectively legalized in the United States of America. In a worryingly close decision the Supreme Court voted 5-4 in favor of declining individual states the right to deny marriage licenses based on the gender the people requesting them. This decision is the culmination of the efforts of millions of people nationwide, including activists who signed a recent Force Change petition. It shows that with enough activism, awareness, and determination, the political system can truly be changed.
In the majority opinion delivered by the court, Justice Anthony Kennedy, has been quoted as saying, “No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family.” He went on to argue that same-sex couples seeking to marry are fundamentally misunderstood by those who favor “traditional marriage.” Finally, those with the power to change things have come to fully understand that love is love, no matter the gender of the person, or people, who feel it.
This victory truly belongs to everyone who has fought tooth and nail for equality of the past two decades. This is a time to celebrate, but not rest too heavily on the laurels of victory. There will be opposition to this decision, the fight for marriage equality is not yet over, and even once it is, there will be more battles to fight on the road to true equality. Please sign here to commend everyone who has worked tirelessly over the years to make this happen and to praise the Supreme Court justices who signed onto the majority opinion for recognizing that there’s no legal basis to prevent two people who love each other from getting married. There is no “gay” marriage henceforth, only marriage, only love.
Dear Justice Kennedy,
It is my great honor to write to you today with profound joy in my heart due to the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on same-sex marriage. As you well know, countless people have been fighting for marriage equality over the past two decades and to see it finally realized as legal is a dream come true for many same-sex couples and others who simply value justice and equality. As you so eloquently noted in your decision, marriage is about love and dedication regardless of the genders of the people who feel it.
I am writing to thank you for doing the right thing. I understand that you are simply interpreting the law to the best of your ability, and attempting to express no discernible bias, but it does not change the fact that you made the right decision. There is no such thing as “gay” marriage anymore, now it’s just marriage and for that you have my profound gratitude and thanks. This is not the final step on the road to true equality, simply one of many, but it certainly proves that equality is possible and inevitable.
