Do Not Decrease Minimum Wage for Teenagers

United-States-coins-by-elembis

Target: Michigan Governor, Rick Snyder

Goal: Do not decrease minimum wage among teenage workforce.

A proposed decrease in minimum wage among teenagers in Michigan is the latest initiative to decrease wages among the working class and increase the prosperity of successful businesses. This is an irresponsible and negligent proposal that must not come to fruition. Ask Michigan Governor Rick Snyder to maintain fair wages among the teenage workforce.

The proposal would increase training wages, although at $6.25 it would still remain far below the federal minimum wage. The most shocking part of the initiative is a decrease in minimum wage for any worker under 20 years of age. Under the new law, they would make only 85 percent of either state or federal wage, determined by which is higher. This is not only a blatant overuse of teenage workers in an attempt to save money, it is a complete denial of the responsibilities of many teenagers and legal adults over 18.

Many teenagers are kicked out of their homes and forced to live on their own long before the government even considers them adults. At age 18, many will be fully self-sufficient, forced to pay for rent, insurance, food, etc. Denying rightful wages for those under 20 is a complete denial of the responsibilities many of these individuals bear.

Please sign this petition to demand Michigan Governor Rick Snyder does not decrease wages among the teenage workforce.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Snyder,

I am writing you regarding a recent proposal to decrease the minimum wage among teenagers in the state of Michigan. This is a dangerous and ignorant initiative that will take money away from the working class and give businesses a pass to hire cheap labor.

At age 18 and even younger, many individuals are already living on their own, sometimes supporting others as well. Decreasing wages is only going to make life more difficult in a society that already does not grant fair wages to the working class. Paying rent and putting food on the table will be significantly more difficult under the new laws.

Furthermore, decreasing wages is going to ensure less spending, decreasing the amount of money boosting the economy. No one benefits from a reduction in wages, not to mention the sheer unfairness of short changing workers simply due to their age. This form of discrimination provides no benefits and will only serve as less incentive for teenagers to work hard.

Please do not pass legislation to decrease wages among teenagers.

Sincerely,
