Target: Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York
Goal: Enact paid family leave in New York.
One hundred eighty-five countries require companies to provide paid leave for new mothers and 71 give it to new fathers; however, the United States is not on either of those lists. The U.S. requires workers to be given unpaid leave for family care but there is no law requiring the workforce to receive some compensation while taking time off for family. Only 12 percent of privately-owned companies currently offer some kind of wage during family leave.
Some states have taken matters on individually, creating successful insurance programs to give workers time with new or ill family members. New York is proposing a bill to bring statewide family leave insurance providing workers with two-thirds of their wages for 12 weeks a year to care for children or ill family members. The bill would be made possible by removing only 45 cents per week from everyone’s paycheck, which would then be given to those who go on leave.
New parents deserve time to get to know their child without worrying about money. The first weeks of parenthood shouldn’t be wasted worrying about when they will have to rush back to work. Emotional care is just as important as financial stability for a new family, but is put on the back burner due to the U.S. having a serious lack of support for new parents.
Bills such as the one in New York are spreading through the country and will allow the U.S. to catch up with the rest of the world on giving new parents the proper amount of time to experience parenthood. Tell the government the people support this bill, it’s very small price, and continue the spread of paid family leave.
Dear Governor Cuomo,
A bill is being considered in your state that would give new parents or those with sick relatives a chance to take time off work to tend to family matters without losing the vital income important to their well being. This bill will only cost each person 45 cents out of their weekly paycheck and would allow the U.S. to provide proper amount of paid family leave for workers.
New York can help lead the charge in spreading paid leave throughout the country. People are willing to pay such a small price for the chance to not have to worry about finances should a family need come around. Your state and New York City are often seen as the frontline for the country and this is an important step will encourage the rest of the U.S. to follow.
Once the bill goes through senate and reaches your desk, passing it into law comes down to you and signing it will do wonderful things for New York and all its families. Make this bill into law.
