Target: Governor of Alabama Robert Bentley
Goal: Praise the governor for removing the Confederate flag from the state capitol.
In wake of the Charleston, South Carolina shooting that killed nine black people inside a church, many activists are calling for officials to remove the Confederate flag from their state capitol buildings. Recently, Alabama Governor Robert Bentley did just that. When asked if it was due to the growing controversy surrounding the flag following the shooting, Bentley said that “This is the right thing to do.”
The Confederate flag promotes harmful ideologies of intolerance and hate. It is unfair to ask African Americans living in this country to move on from America’s painful past of slavery while seeing the flag and all that it stands for at their state capitol. As long as the Confederate flag is instituted at state capitols, America will continue to promote its shameful and ignorant past. The removal of the flag from Alabama’s state capitol makes the United States one step closer to ridding itself from racist ideologies.
Sign this petition to support Governor Robert Bentley in his historic decision to take down the Confederate Flag and his act of solidarity for the victims of the shooting and their families.
Dear Governor Robert Bentley,
I am writing this petition letter to you to thank you for removing the Confederate flag from Alabama’s state capitol. To many, it is much more than a symbol of the South seceding from the Union. It is a painful reminder of the injustice that African American people have been subjected to for hundreds of years. Removing the flag does not erase this injustice, but it does let the African American community know that politicians are no longer going to support what the Confederate flag stands for–intolerance and hatred.
I hope that your actions prompt other politicians and governors to realize the implications that come with having the Confederate flag intact at their state capitols as you did and that they are prompted to remove it. Perhaps your actions can create a precedent for the flag at state capitols buildings.
Thank you for making a decision that will have a positive impact on the lives of so many people living in Alabama. Seeing a politician make this type of decision is extremely encouraging and I am sure your constituents will appreciate all that you have done in the wake of a tragedy that has hurt so many.
