Punish Zara for Alleged Racist, Anti-Semitic and Homophobic Policies

Target: Cynthia D. DiBartolo, Chairperson of the Greater New York Chamber of Commerce

Goal: Conduct an independent study on Zara and punish them if it’s true that they enforce racist policies.

A survey conducted by the Center for Popular Democracy, a labor and social advocacy group, questioned employees at six Zara locations around New York City. The survey reported that employees say they are instructed to racially profile customers (especially black customers.) Employees who took the survey also reported that black employees have less opportunity to advance.

The survey found that the store’s theft-prevention policy targets black shoppers at almost seven times the rate of white shoppers, according to employees. Forty-six percent of the employees said black shoppers were “always” or “often” targeted to be watched and followed for theft prevention, 14 percent of employees said that was the case for Latino shoppers. Only 7 percent said that was the case with white shoppers.

Sixty-four percent of black employees surveyed said they felt they were discriminated against by managers based on their race when it came to advancing in the company.

This all comes after a former corporate attorney for the company recently sued for $40 million under claims that he was fired for being gay, Jewish, and American. In the past the company has come under fire for selling merchandise like pajamas that looked like a Holocaust prisoner uniform, a t-shirt that said “White is the new black,” and a purse with swastikas all over it.

This kind of racist behavior cannot be tolerated. Urge officials to conduct a legitimate study of the company and punish Zara if it’s found to have these racist policies.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Cynthia D. DiBartolo,

A survey conducted by the Center for Popular Democracy at six Zara locations around New York City reported that employees say they are instructed to racially profile customers (especially black customers) and that black employees have less opportunity to advance.

The survey found that the store’s theft-prevention policy targets black shoppers at almost seven times the rate of white shoppers, according to employees. Sixty-four percent of black employees surveyed said they felt they were discriminated against by managers based on their race when it came to advancing in the company.

This kind of racist behavior cannot be tolerated. I urge you to conduct a legitimate study of the company and punish Zara if it’s found to have these racist policies.

Sincerely,
