Target: Subway CEO, Fred DeLuca
Goal: Demand popular fast food company stop using meat that has been raised with excessive antibiotics.
A group of health experts, advocates, and consumers has put out a warning of a major public health crisis lying in one of the most popular fast food chains in America. They are calling on Subway, the fast food sandwich chain, to stop serving meat that has been raised with excessive antibiotics.
The union of 60 different groups, including health professionals and supporters from Consumers Union, is urging the company to end its use of medically important antibiotics in its pork, beef, and chicken products and to commit to phasing out the use of it in a reasonable amount of time. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that every year two million Americans contract antibiotic-resistant infections and 23,000 of them die from it. The livestock industry has been regularly serving its animals low doses of antibiotics for years, including antibiotics that are used to treat humans.
Reports show that the majority of the antibiotics sold in America are used to boost the productivity of livestock operations, not to actually treat human diseases. This is to combat the unsanitary living conditions that the animals are forced to live in. As a result, there is now an increase in microbes that are resistant to any type of antibiotic treatment.
Please sign this petition to praise the efforts of the group of health professionals and to demand that Subway stop killing its consumers by using meat that has been injected with antibiotics.
Dear Fred DeLuca,
As one of the leading fast food chains in America, we believe that you have a big responsibility to make sure that Americans are not consuming food that can threaten their health. You pride your business on serving your customers a range of healthier food choices to nourish their bodies, yet your ingredients are actually doing the complete opposite. It is alarming to learn that two million people contract antibiotic-resistant infections every year. If something isn’t done to stop it, more people will die every year as a result.
You have already taken the right steps by removing artificial colors from your food. Please take that extra step and remove the chicken, beef, and pork that have been raised with antibiotics. If the problem is already established, it is your responsibility to find the best possible solution to stop it before it kills any more people.
