Denounce Lawmaker for Blaming Charleston Victims for Their Own Deaths

William Chumley

Target: South Carolina Representative William Chumley

Goal: Have Representative Chumley step down from his position as house representative for the heartless and illogical comments he made about the Charleston, South Carolina shooting victims.

A CNN reporter asked South Carolina Representative William Chumley about the current heated debate on whether or not the Confederate flag should still be flown at the statehouse, but Chumley randomly turned around and answered by blaming the Charleston shooting victims for their own deaths.

Chumley said the victims “waited their turn to be shot,” citing that “someone in there with the means of self defense could have stopped this, and we’d have less funerals than we’re having.”

“Why didn’t somebody do something?” Chumley asked, seeming to smile at his next line, “I mean, you’ve got one skinny person shooting a gun…I understand that he reloaded his gun during the process.”

Chumley is part of the group “Sons of Confederate Veterans,” a group which one might question its need to exist considering the Confederate South seceded from the Union so that they could continue to use Africans as slaves.

Chumley’s words are disgustingly insensitive during this time of great tragedy and should be taken as an indication that this man is not fit to run for office. Demand Chumley resign from his position as a representative.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Representative Chumley,

A CNN reporter asked you about the current heated debate on whether or not the Confederate flag should still be flown at the statehouse, and you responded with an off-topic answer essentially blaming the Charleston shooting victims for their own deaths. You claimed that they “waited their turn to be shot” as if they just stood there and took the shooting, as if unarmed people caught off-guard by a racist murderer in their house of worship should’ve tried just a little harder.

How dare you make such heartless and disgusting comments amidst one of the most tragic incidents in American history? You should be ashamed of yourself and have proven you obviously don’t have the emotional capacity, common sense or logic to hold a position representing the people. I demand you step down from your position in office.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
