Stop Chemical Companies From Spilling Toxic Waste

Target: John Boehner, Speaker of the U.S. House

Goal: Increase regulations in bill for chemical companies in order to prevent more toxic spills.

Last year, 7,500 gallons of a coal processing chemical leaked into the Elk River in Charleston, West Va. Many residents had to spend a lot of money on bottled water because they feared for their safety in using tap water that had been effected by the toxic chemical spill.

A bill has been prompted by this horrific spill that will place more regulations on companies in the chemical industry in order to prevent dangerous spills like this from happening in the future. However, public health advocates and environmental activists say that the new bill in its current state isn’t as strong as it needs to be because it was influenced by the American Chemistry Council, a powerful lobby for the industry.

These activists claim that the bill won’t actually help to prevent toxic spills that are not only dangerous to human lives, but to the environment and the innocent animals who inhabit it.

This powerful lobby has pushed in the past to prevent regulations that would improve safety for citizens and the environment, and we cannot allow them to have that power any longer. Urge representatives to increase the regulations in the bill for chemical companies in order to prevent more toxic spills.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear John Boehner,

A bill has been prompted by the dangerous spill that happened in January of 2014, when 7,500 gallons of a coal processing chemical leaked into the Elk River in Charleston, West Va. This caused many residents to spend a lot of money on bottled water because they feared for their safety in using tap water that had been effected by the toxic chemical spill.

This bill place more regulations on companies in the chemical industry in order to prevent dangerous spills like this from happening in the future, however public health advocates and environmental activists say that the new bill in its current state isn’t as strong as it needs to be because it was influenced by the American Chemistry Council.

This powerful lobby has pushed in the past to prevent regulations that would improve safety for citizens and the environment, and we cannot allow them to have that power any longer. I urge you to increase the regulations in the bill for chemical companies in order to prevent more toxic spills.

Sincerely,
