Punish Farmers for Wasting Water During Extreme Drought

drought-by-desiitaly

Target: Felicia Marcus, Chair of the California State Water Resources Control Board

Goal: Punish farmers and water districts who dismissed conservation orders during the drought and increase efforts to ensure these entities are complying.

Less than a third of the farmers, water districts and communities with rights to water responded to a conservation order by California’s State Water Resources Control Board. These entities missed a deadline for confirming that they indeed followed the conversation order and stopped pumping from rivers and streams during on of the worst droughts California has seen in recent years.

Some of the long-term effects of major droughts such as this are wildfires, mudslides, flash floods, destruction of ecosystems and animal habitats, seawater intrusion and debris from wildfires contaminating clean water supplies, river flow destruction that negatively impacts salmon communities, and streams, lakes, estuaries and wetlands can dry up.

This drought will not only effect human lives, but it will also destroy the environment and the animal lives that inhabit that environment if dramatic actions are not taken to prevent the drought from worsening. Urge state officials to punish the farmers and water districts who dismissed these vital conservation orders during the drought, and ask that officials increase efforts to ensure these entities are complying.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Felicia Marcus,

Less than a third of the farmers, water districts and communities with rights to water responded to a conservation order issued by your board during one the worst droughts California has seen in recent years.

I urge you to punish the farmers and water districts who dismissed these vital conservation orders so that we can protect human lives, animal lives, and our environment. I also urge you to increase efforts to ensure these entities are complying with these orders by sending officials to physically deliver orders and check on responses.

Sincerely,
