Target: New York Governor Andrew Cuomo
Goal: Reduce nitrogen pollution to protect organisms living in the Long Island Sound.
Marine life is being suffocated because of nitrogen from sewage treatment plants, fertilizers, septic systems, and water runoff from these systems that help to proliferate algae blooms in the Long Island Sound, which produces toxins and use up oxygen so that other organisms living in the Sound are depleted of it. The nitrogen reduction plan implemented in 2000 is coming to an end and oxygen levels are still extremely low.
Nitrogen pollution resulting in algae blooms creating low oxygen levels can create devastating consequences for organisms living in these environments. Low oxygen levels can kill fish and lobsters which can have a myriad of effects on the economy, close beaches and kill marshes that stop runoff from flooding communities.
To save the Long Island Sound, a new nitrogen reduction plan needs to put into place by the end of the year. Sign this petition asking for Andrew Cuomo to implement this plan.
Dear New York Governor Andrew Cuomo,
I am writing this letter to you to express what I believe is a great need for a nitrogen pollution reduction plan for the Long Island Sound. I applaud your efforts thus far in cleaning up the Long Island Sound by improving water quality, among other efforts. However, there is still a drastic need for nitrogen levels to be reduced. A plan needs to be put into place as quickly as possible.
Nitrogen is in fertilizers and sewage system. When water from the fertilizer and sewage runs of into bodies of water such as the Long Island Sound, algae blooms form. The blooms use up available oxygen and leave the rest of the organisms in the environment without it. Consequently, these algae blooms can create devastating consequences for the environment and the economy, when fish and lobster populations dwindle as they run out of oxygen. The blooms can also block out sunlight so that plant organisms not only are deprived of oxygen, but sunlight so that they are unable to grow.
Your constituents care deeply for the Long Island Sound. It is important to them that it is a healthy environment. Additionally, not implementing a new nitrogen reduction plan could cause severe problems for the economy in a few years if the situation is not taken care of. If you ensure that the Sound will be protected from nitrogen runoff, I believe that your constituents will deeply appreciate what you have done.
