Stop Sexual Harassment on Public Transit

Target: New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo

Goal: Hold those found guilty of sexual harassment on public transportation accountable for their actions.

Sexual harassment on public transportation will no longer be tolerated, pending legislation to classify it as a misdemeanor. This has been a growing issue on all forms of public transportation and until recently, little could be done to prevent it. Ask New York governor Andrew Cuomo to enact legislation to protect victims from unwanted forms of sexual contact on public transportation.

The close proximity of public transportation and the fact that riders are generally trapped both contribute to an increase in sexual harassment. Riders feel as though they are unable to protect themselves, confined to a small space with several strangers and nowhere to run. Conversely, this setting gives perpetrators the false impression that they can act without consequence. Both could not be further from the truth. Riders need to know they are always protected and perpetrators need to be held responsible for their wrongdoings.

Classifying sexual harassment as a misdemeanor reminds riders that the laws are in place to protect them and make public transportation safer for all. Though many riders hope the future will provide tougher regulation against sexual harassment, this is a huge step in the right direction.

Please sign this petition to urge Governor Andrew Cuomo to enact legislation to protect riders of public transportation and crack down on cases of sexual harassment.

Dear Governor Cuomo,

Public transportation can be scary for many, particularly because riders are often enclosed in cars for long periods of time. There is little regulation present to protect victims of sexual harassment on public transportation and unfortunately, many incidents slip through the cracks. There is much more to be done regarding this matter.

Classifying such behavior as a misdemeanor will be a huge win for all and increases feelings of protection among riders. Those found guilty of sexual harassment will be held accountable for their actions and are more likely to avoid similar behavior in the future. This is the first step in a process that improves the safety of public transportation.

It is the state’s responsibility to protect citizens and ensure their safety on various forms of public transportation. Enacting this legislation will significantly contribute to why New York is one of the nation’s leaders in public transportation.

Please sign legislation designed to protect victims of sexual harassment on public transportation and hold perpetrators responsible for their actions.

It absolutely amazes me that this would be considered a misdemeanor! Are you serious New York? It’s sexual harassment! How can that ever be considered minor? This needs to be changed and it needs to be changed NOW! OMG
