Save Lives by Reducing Air Pollution

Target: Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, and Xi Jinping, President of China

Goal: Save hundreds of thousands of lives by reducing air pollution.

Millions could be saved in India and China just by cutting down on the prevalence of a particular kind of air pollution called “fine particles,” according to a recent study. People deserve to live their lives without fearing that they will be cut short by nothing more than the air they breathe. Demand that China and India take immediate action to cut down on this air pollution.

A study recently released by Environmental Science and Technology looked at the effects of “fine particle air pollution” on worldwide public health. The particles in this kind of air pollution are 28 times smaller than a human hair is thin—so small that when they enter human lungs they can pass through into the bloodstream with the oxygen.

This leads to an increased risk of a number of potentially fatal maladies, including heart attack, stroke, a gamut of respiratory diseases, and cancer. The prevalence of this kind of pollution is so extreme that, if it were somehow completely eliminated, at least 2 million deaths would be prevented worldwide every single year.

Indeed, the study also points out that if just two countries—China and India—were able to cut down on fine particle air pollution, 1.4 million lives would be saved annually. Sign the petition below to demand that the governments of China and India take immediate steps to reduce this kind of air pollution in their countries.

Dear President Jinping and Prime Minister Modi,

I am writing you both today regarding a kind of air pollution called “fine particle” pollution. This type of environmental contamination is responsible for millions of otherwise preventable deaths every single year. Unfortunately, a great many of those deaths take place in your countries.

A recent global analysis of fine particle air pollution concluded that at least 1.4 million people in your countries are killed annually from complications or diseases arising from exposure to unhealthy levels of this kind of pollution. I’m sure you’ll both agree that this status quo is entirely unacceptable.

Fortunately, it’s possible for your countries to reduce the levels of fine particle pollution in your air down to a safe amount. Fine particles come from fires, coal power plants, agricultural and industrial production, and automobiles. If emissions from these sources get cleaned up, fine particles will be reduced, and millions of people will be saved.

People deserve the chance to live their lives without worrying about slowly being poisoned to death by the very air they breathe. I demand that you take steps to reduce the amount of fine particle air pollution in your countries down to safe levels at once.

  1. Why don’t we try reducing our air pollution first before trying to make changes somewhere else. They will look at us and laugh.
