Stop Abusing and Terrifying Pigs for Entertainment

Target: Harrison County Fair Board Member, Doug Henricksen

Goal: Stop treating pigs cruelly at county fair for the sake of entertainment.

A county fair is letting people frighten pigs and chase them in an arena until they wrestle them to the ground, all for the crowd’s entertainment. Demand that the fair’s board members put an end to this inhumane entertainment immediately.

This summer’s county fair in Harrison County, Indiana is planning on letting this cruel treatment of pigs continue despite the opposition it faced during a recent board meeting. Pig wrestling involves setting a frightened pig into a large arena with a crowd watching as a team of four chase the pig and wrestle the pig into submission so that it touches a rubber tire.

This is primarily a 4-H fair, which helps youth engage in raising livestock properly—pig wrestling is not what we should be promoting at this fair. Teaching youths that it is okay to treat pigs and other animals with such cruelty should be frowned upon. Instead, members of 4-H and everyone who attends the county fair need to learn how to treat animals with respect and care.

Pastor James Higdon made the case for this animal cruelty when he asked how people would feel if it were their pets out in the arena. “Would you like your dog out there participating in this? Would you like to have your cat out there participating in this? And if the answer is, of course, no then we shouldn’t be doing this to pigs either,” said Higdon.

We need to treat all animals, livestock included, with love and respect. Please sign the petition below to urge Mr. Henricksen of the Harrison County Fair Board to stop this cruel practice.

Dear Mr. Henricksen,

This summer, the Harrison County Fair is planning to allow pig wrestling to occur as a form of entertainment. This is wrong and is a form of animal cruelty.

As you are well aware, pig wrestling involves letting a frightened pig loose in an arena with a large crowd watching as a team of four chase and subdue the pig so that it touches a rubber tire. Is this form of entertainment truly necessary for the livelihood of the Harrison County Fair?

This fair is primarily a 4-H fair, where children are taught the importance of raising livestock properly and treating them with respect. Pig wrestling is a poor choice of entertainment and it only promotes treating animals with cruelty. How would you feel if this were your dog or cat set loose in an arena and terrified out of its mind?

Please stop this cruel practice and find a more humane way to entertain the people of Harrison County.

Would you treat a child like this? Oh sorry – I guess you would.

  2. Sylvia Browning says:

Pigs have more intelligence than most humans!

Stop this horrible abuse of pigs.

If you must fight, I suggest you humans fight each other. Wrestle man to man for a fair contest.

Children must be taught Compassion towards animals of every species.

  3. pierre chantelauze says:

Still another proof humankind has gone mad.
    What a pity.

  4. Alexandre Engelen says:

Foolish people! Replace pigs by people but leave the animals alone! And this is called civilized?

  5. Somehow one cannot help wondering who are the ‘pigs’…

  6. Bina Pannell says:

Just stop using any animal for entertainment. If you really need to reinforce machismo, just have a pissing contest with each other.

  7. Heather Brophy says:

  8. Amy M Glogowski says:

Make these people accountable for their actions, lock them up & throw away the key & these innocent animals don’t deserve being abused like this!

  9. Studies have shown that pigs are as intelligent as 3-year-old children and are more intelligent than pet dogs. Would you treat a your toddler or your pet dog this way? No, of course NOT. Therefore, it is high time that such inhumane treatment of any animal for entertainment be STOPPED IMMEDIATELY. WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE THAT THINK IT IS OKAY TO TERRIFY AND MALTREAT AN ANIMAL IN THIS WAY FOR A SAKE OF A FEW LAUGHS? STOP THIS CRUELTY NOW!

  10. These idiots are sadists! Attacking and abusing a gentle and intelligent animal are the actions of cowards! There is nothing entertaining about hurting and terrifying animals! Cruelty towards animals is just sick! There is no sense of fairness and, certainly, no bravery, when animals can’t defend themselves–just bullying. If men choose to wrestle and abuse each other, have at it, but leave the helpless pigs alone!

  11. Janet Jacobson says:

How do we know the pigs aren’t having fun?
Settle down. I am trolling you, idiot.

  12. T agree 100%. Another great sport are the rattlesnake round-ups held around the country where participants pour gasoline into rattlesnake tunnels forcing them out of their holes, along with the gopher turtle that share the hole with them. Then large crowds of people pay money to see hundreds of snakes handled and milked of their venom. They try to somewhat justify these events by the supposed sale of this venom to drug companies. This, of course in B.S. because companies that manufacture antivenin do not buy venom not knowing if it was procured in a sanitary manner. They milk their own snakes. All snakes are killed and used for hatbands, lamps, ashtrays etc.

  13. kay allan says:

i hope these evil vile people get struck down dead, and the worse thing is that these beautiful creatures probably have more sense that the bastards that ill treat them, they really do deserve to get what is coming to them, but of course they never do.

  14. These acts are mentally deranged, cruel, irrational, immoral, hateful —

These acts against animals are crimes —

Give these idiot-monsters something else to do!

These imbeciles need to learn some respect and care for our pigs!

  15. “So many people insist they are against animal abuse, cruelty, suffering and the inhumane treatment of animals, yet they don’t understand they are actively engaging in and supporting egregious suffering, abuse, cruelty and inhumane treatment when they eat animals and their ‘by-products.’ If you are against cruelty, suffering and inhumane treatment, then you go vegan. It’s just that simple.” – Sarah Kiser

  16. Public video from the Harrison County “hog catching” event. Spoiler: it’s animal cruelty.
