Prevent Accidental Deaths Like 3-Year-Old Who Shot Himself

Target: Clifford A. Rosenberger, Speaker of the Ohio House

Goal: Enact a requirement for more extensive gun training and create stricter gun safety laws to prevent more accidental deaths of children.

A 3-year-old boy in Ohio recently shot himself after his mother left a loaded gun without the safety on in her purse and within the child’s reach. The boy, Marques Green, got a hold of the gun and accidentally shot himself in the heart. His mother, Elizabeth Green, will not be facing any charges.

This incident comes shortly after a 14-year-old in Ohio was accidentally shot to death by his friend when they were playing with an unsecured gun. How many more of these horrific deaths have to occur before something is done to prevent them? These are tragedies that could have and should have been prevented.

Green had a gun permit and had undergone training, but obviously this was not enough. The best way to prevent accidents is by improving safety. Urge the Ohio legislature to enact more extensive gun training and create stricter gun safety laws to help prevent more accidental and unnecessary deaths, especially of children.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Clifford A. Rosenberger,

A 3-year-old Ohio boy recently shot himself in the heart on accident and died after his mother left a loaded gun without the safety on in her purse and within the child’s reach. Somehow, the mother will not be facing any neglect charges. This is a saddening tragedy that could have and should have been prevented.

Green’s permit and gun training obviously did not prepare her enough for the responsibility of owning a gun, especially while caring for a young child. These kind of accidents cannot keep happening and something must be done to stop them. I urge you to enact more extensive gun training and create stricter gun safety laws to help prevent more accidental and unnecessary deaths, especially of children.

Sincerely,
