Applaud Stricter Penalties for Drunk Driving

Target: Colorado Governor, John Hickenlooper

Goal: Congratulate the approval of stricter laws for drinking and driving.

Colorado has joined several other states in increased penalties for driving under the influence. The state has made a commitment to improving laws and making the roads safer. Thank Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper for improving the safety of the roads and actively discouraging drinking and driving.

Colorado was previously considered a state with weak laws regarding drinking and driving. Several DUI’s would result in nothing more than a misdemeanor and brief jail time, in some cases. Under the new law, however, a fourth DUI can result in up to six years in jail. Ideally, the mere thought of six years in prison will be enough to lower the numbers of DUI’s each year. If not, irresponsible citizens need to be removed from the roads to prevent fatal accidents.

Though safety seems like enough of an issue to make most people think twice about drinking and driving, statistics show this is not always the case. The law needs to actively and aggressively discourage drinking and driving in order to keep citizens from getting behind the wheel, especially in the case of repeat offenders.

Please sign this petition to thank Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper for increasing laws on drinking and driving and taking a stand for safety.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Hickenlooper,

Colorado has made significant progress in addressing the issue of drinking and driving. Recent legislation has increased the penalties for repeat offenders, providing more incentive to act in accordance with state laws.

So much hard work has gone into the passage of stricter DUI laws, demonstrating Colorado’s desire to protect citizens and discourage an unsafe and illegal practice. Citizens are pleased and feel this represents a very important part of a larger goal.

Prior to new legislation, Colorado had minor penalties for DUI’s, especially where repeat offenders were concerned. Establishing a clear policy and making sure citizens understand the consequences of their actions is of the utmost importance. I hope this will significantly influence many to reconsider their actions, keeping in mind the potential to spend years in jail. At the very least, it ensures several drunk drivers will pay for their crimes and be kept off the roads for years to come.

Thank you for your efforts in the passage of legislation to protect the state of Colorado from drinking and driving incidents.

Sincerely,
