Target: Speaker of the House John Boehner
Goal: Provide mental health coverage to all American citizens to prevent future mass shootings.
Another mass shooting has taken place, this time at an African American church in South Carolina. The shooter, a 21-year-old white male, was responsible for the deaths of nine people at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church where he opened fire during a time of prayer.
Testimony from witnesses detail a deeply disturbed and troubled person, which only solidifies the nation’s need for mental health coverage. It is likely that many of the nation’s recent shooters are mentally ill, and while gun control and access is a hotly debated issue, the nation cannot ignore the importance of mental health. Sign this petition and urge Speaker of the House John Boehner to craft a law providing mental health coverage to all American citizens.
The shooting happened on a Wednesday night when church-goers were praying. The shooter, Dylann Roof, apparently arrived at the church, prayed for an hour, and then stood up to say that he was there to “shoot black people.” Authorities believe that he opened fire with a handgun, a weapon that was given to him by his father for his 21st birthday.
During the incident, he killed nine people, two of which were prominent members Rev. Clementa Pinckney and South Carolina Senator Kent Williams. Roof also left alive victims, stating, “I’m not going to kill you, I’m going to spare you, so you can tell them what happened.” Roof was apprehended by local authorities without incident, and a handgun was found on his person.
When authorities began the search for him, they found a Facebook picture of him wearing a jacket with the apartheid flag of South Africa and Rhodesia. Both regions were known for their segregation and oppression of black people. This man does not support equality of the races, he supports their massacre. Please sign this petition and urge Speaker of the House John Boehner to craft a law providing mental health care to all Americans so future incidents such as these don’t happen again.
Dear Speaker of the House John Boehner,
It is with a heavy heart that I write this letter to you. Nine more people have died thanks to the actions of a mentally disturbed individual. Dylan Roof held foolish and hateful beliefs about African Americans, and this hatred manifested in the deaths of several church goers. This is not the first time innocent people have died at the hands of cruel people. Unfortunately, the pattern that many of these shooters carry is the fact that they have troubled pasts and often were abused.
I implore you and all at Congress to implement a plan that provides Americans with mental health coverage. This should allow Americans to seek health with any and all mental illness. I realize that there is a huge stigma against mental illness in America, but citizens need to move past this so everyone can get well. If we are to prevent future shootings from occurring, we have to make sure that everyone is well mentally and emotionally.
