Enact a Hate Crimes Law After Racist Shooting at Church

Target: Jay Lucas, Speaker of the South Carolina House

Goal: Propose legislation to protect the victims of hate crimes in South Carolina as well as increase the punishment for perpetrators of hate crimes.

Nine people were shot and killed in a massacre at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina very recently. The 21-year-old shooter was white, and all of the victims were black, leading police to state that they believe it was a hate crime. Yet South Carolina is one of only five states in the U.S. that does not have a hate crimes law.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, 19 known hate groups reside in South Carolina, including the Klu Klux Klan. Over 12 of the groups are centered solely around hate for other races. One group’s website reads, “If you call us racists, our response will be ‘So what?'”

Although a federal hate crimes act was enacted in 2009 for felony crimes, all hate crimes need to be punished severely in hopes to prevent more tragic events like the Charleston church shooting. Urge the South Carolina legislature to enact legislation to protect victims of hate crimes and increase the punishment for perpetrators of hate crimes.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Jay Lucas,

Nine people were shot and killed in a massacre at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in your state of South Carolina. Local police believe it was a hate crime, yet South Carolina is one of only five states in the U.S. that does not have a hate crimes law.

If it weren’t for the federal hate crimes law, hate crime victims would have zero protection in your state. Although the federal law covers felony crimes, all hate crimes need to be punished severely in hopes to prevent more tragic events like the Charleston chuch shooting. I urge you to enact legislation to protect victims of hate crimes and increase the punishment for perpetrators of hate crimes.

Sincerely,

  1. You don’t know what this freak’s motive was.
That information has not been publicized.
Responsible people don’t publicly throw a petition on line before they have any facts.
You are trying to use this as a means of making white people look bad.
I am done with you for good.
