Fire Cops Allegedly Belonging to White Supremacist Group

US Confederate flag

Target: Anniston Chief of Police Shane Denham

Goal: Fire cops who are allegedly members of the racist neo-Confederate League of the South organization.

A video recording allegedly revealed that two police officers are members of the racist Southern separatist League of the South group, but they are still serving the majority-black community of Anniston, Alabama. These officers’ alleged associations suggest racist bias and an inability to be trusted to faithfully fulfill their duties as law enforcement. Demand that these men be fired from the police department at once.

The League of the South is a white supremacist Confederate organization dedicated to secession and recreating the Confederate States of America. Its president is noted racist Michael Hill, a man who has railed against “negroes” and “Jewry” for years. The League even recently created a uniformed paramilitary unit it calls “the Indomitables”  that is “tasked with advancing a second southern secession by any means necessary,” according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Josh Doggrell and Wayne Brown are officers of the Anniston Police Department and reported members of this Confederate organization. The city of Anniston is 51.5 percent African American. When white police officers of a black city are members of a Southern nationalist group headed by a man who writes manifestos about the coming race war, that should raise red flags.

Despite Doggrell and Brown’s recorded affiliation, the department leadership has refused to dismiss them from their positions. Cops around the country have been fired for displays of racism in the past, and these men should be treated no differently. Sign the petition below to demand that Anniston Police Chief Shane Denham fire these two officers at once for purportedly being part of this extremist organization.

Dear Chief Denham,

I am writing you today regarding officers Josh Doggrell and Wayne Brown. For some reason, these men are still serving on your police force despite the allegations that their membership in the League of the South (LS) was brought to your attention. Frankly, this is wrong.

Your city says that it cannot fire police officers just for being part of a “civic club,” but cops around the country have been forced to leave their posts for similar reasons countless times in the past. In 2009 and 2014, police officers were compelled to resign for being members of the Ku Klux Klan, and just this past year members of the San Francisco and Ferguson police departments were forced to do the same after racist department communications were brought to light.

I ask you, then, why membership in the LS is being treated as different than the above examples and insufficient grounds for termination. Being a Confederate organization with strong ties to the white supremacist “kith and kin” ethic, the LS is by definition racist. Beyond that, however, its president Michael Hill is explicitly white supremacist and strategizes about how white people can beat black people during a race war on the LS’s own website.

How much more proof do you need that Doggrell and Brown deserve to be fired for their membership in the LS? Are you going to wait until their apparent bias gets the better of them out in the field and they shoot an unarmed black kid? You should not risk it. I demand that you dismiss these men from your department at once.

  1. If proven to be members, then fire them.

  2. Bina Pannell says:

Yep I agree. The article says “allegedly” so if proven they have no place in law enforcement.

  4. Amy M Glogowski says:

If found guilty of this, make them accountable & make sure they don’t do it again.
