Guarantee Workers’ Right to Paid Sick Leave

Target: Oregon Governor Kate Brown

Goal: Guarantee that workers can have paid sick days off of work.

Oregon workers will finally be afforded the right to guaranteed paid sick leave like those in the rest of the developed world, if a proposal being considered in the state becomes law. This is a necessary guarantee that should have been instituted years ago. Demand that this bill become law without delay.

The United States currently has no legal guarantees for workers’ right to paid sick leave. As a result, about 40 percent of all American workers lack the option to take a day off if they get sick without losing necessary income. Because of this hole in federal law, several states have taken it upon themselves to guarantee paid sick leave to the workers in their own states. Fortunately, Oregon is poised to be added to that list.

Oregon’s proposal would apply to all business with 10 or more employees. For every 30 hours worked, a worker would earn one hour of paid sick leave, which they could use in the future for taking time off work if they themselves get sick, for not going into work to care for a sick family member at home, or for donating to a fellow worker in need.

People cannot control when they get sick, and employers should respect that. Workers should not be punished for something that is no fault of their own. Sign the petition below to demand that Oregon’s governor approve this guarantee into law.

Dear Governor Brown,

I am writing you today regarding Senate Bill 454, a piece of legislation that is coming to your office for your approval in the very near future. When this happens, you should sign it into law without delay.

Senate Bill 454 guarantees the vast majority of workers in your state paid sick leave. Incredibly, this right is not already afforded to Oregon’s employees, to say nothing about those around the country generally. As it stands, 47 percent of Oregon workers—and 70 percent of the state’s low-wage workers—don’t get to take paid sick days.

This, obviously, puts many of your state’s workers in precarious positions. They are forced to decide between their health and their finances—between their own lives and their ability to support themselves and their families. This is a decision that no American should have to make in our modern world.

Every other developed country on the planet guarantees their workers paid sick days—ours should be no different, and you have the chance to lead us into the right direction. I demand that you sign Senate Bill 454 into law.
