Make Nutella Environmentally Sustainable

Target: Acting Chairman of Ferrero Rocher, Giovanni Ferrero

Goal: Ensure ingredients for Nutella are environmentally sustainable.

The ever-popular hazelnut and chocolate spread, Nutella, has received backlash from the French administration. The administration states that Ferrero Rocher is responsible for the destruction of forests in Malaysia, and the company is not only destroying forests, but planting palm trees to obtain the palm oil used to make Nutella. With climate change and the fate of the environment on the conscience of many citizens, it is imperative that Ferrero Rocher sources its ingredients in an environmentally sustainable way. Sign this petition and make Ferrero Rocher accountable; urge the company to source its ingredients in a responsible manner.

The issue with Nutella and Ferrero Rocher was brought about by France’s Ecology Minster Segolene Royal who tried to impose a 300 percent tax on palm oil in 2011; it never went through. The minister recently made comments about how everyone should stop eating Nutella because the product contributed to the destruction of the environment. Indeed, Ferrero Rocher gets 80 percent of its palm oil that’s used to make Nutella from Malaysia. The company gets the rest of their supply from Indonesia, Brazil, and Papua New Guinea.

The company stated that it’s aware of the destruction it has caused to the environment, and will make changes to address these issues. Whether or not Ferrero Rocher will hold up its promise is questionable. However, it is true that many of products in the modern world come from palm oil. It’s resulted in the destruction of habitats for various species, especially the orangutans. If you want to ensure that our environment is kept alive and healthy, please sign this petition. Tell Acting Chairman Giovanni Ferrero that the company should stop cutting down trees in Malaysia. The company should instead replant trees that were cut down, and source ingredients in an environmentally sustainable way.

Dear Giovanni Ferrero,

It’s come to my attention that your company, Ferrero Rocher, is cutting down trees in Malaysia and planting palm oil trees to make products such as Nutella. While Nutella is immensely popular, I am deeply concerned with the environmental impact this product has. Climate change, clean water, and the survival of threatened species are on everyone’s minds. I would hate to see our trees disappear because humans cannot control their craving for chocolate.

I know that Ferrero Rocher has a commitment to the environment, and I hope the company will keep its promise. Our environment shouldn’t be destroyed, especially if it’s for chocolate. I ask that you and your company keep to their word and ensure that Nutella is made from environmentally sustainable ingredients.
