Target: Ireland Prime Minister, Enda Kenny
Goal: Reform cruel and outdated laws regarding abortion in Ireland.
Attitudes toward abortion have significantly changed over the years; however, Ireland has maintained its intolerant policies. Following Ireland’s legalization of gay marriage, abortion is now at the forefront of all social issues, receiving even more attention than before. Ask Prime Minister Enda Kenny to repeal harsh laws regarding abortion and give women power over their reproductive rights.
Citizens have worked for years to repeal abortion laws and the chances of success are now higher than ever. Currently, women may only receive an abortion in an emergency situation. In other words, women have absolutely no control over their own bodies.
All women are expected to carry to term, even in the event of severe complications. In the absence of a heartbeat, women must continue to carry their fetus to term despite the complications that lie ahead. Victims of rape are treated no differently and receive little compassion from a country that forces its victims to suffer in silence.
These laws are cruel and eliminate a woman’s right to choose. Ireland must take action immediately. Please sign this petition to ask Prime Minister Enda Kenny to legalize abortion in Ireland and give women the right to dictate their own fate.
Dear Prime Minister,
Ireland maintains some of the strictest laws regarding abortion and a woman’s right to govern her own body. These harsh methods have proven ineffective for years and the public has continued its fight for women’s rights.
Women in Ireland do not enjoy any rights over their own pregnancy. This is particularly heartbreaking for rape victims and women forced to carry a deceased fetus to term. This is cruel and unnecessary treatment and represents a severe lack of rights among women.
It is a well-known fact that women have been traveling to the United Kingdom for many decades to gain access to abortion. For so long, the U.K. has been protecting the women of Ireland in a way their own country has chosen not to.
It is time for Ireland to protect its citizens and give women the right to choose. Doing so would significantly improve the lives of many of Ireland’s citizens and demonstrate concern and compassion. Women would finally feel protected and cared for under Ireland’s laws and most importantly, free to make choices for their own body.
Please reform Ireland’s laws on abortion and give women the rights they have long deserved.
