Target: Speaker of the House, John Boehner
Goal: Require all prisons to provide more than one sanitary pad per day to female prisoners.
Prisons in the United States are humiliating female prisoners by forcing them to go without or limiting them to one pad per day when they’re on their periods. This leaves them to be humiliated when the blood seeps into their clothes or their pads slide out of their pants. Not only is this unsanitary, but is a violation of a basic human right. Tell Speaker of the House John Boehner to require prisons to provide female prisoners with enough pads and tampons when they are on their menstrual cycle.
An article from The Guardian discussed what happens to female prisoners at York Correctional Institute. There, the author described what it was like when she had to stay at the facility for six years. She had used tampons as scouring pads and only had one pad to use per day for two weeks. The pads themselves were poorly made. With no adhesive or wings to attach the pad to the panty liner, the pads would often slide out when the woman was walking.
The author stated that she didn’t have that problem because she wore six of her pads at once, preventing the pads from sliding out. Other women however were not so fortunate, as the author was able to do this because she bought pads from the commissary. Inmates can make as little as a dollar a day and that money will be used to buy other things in the prison.
Forcing a prisoner to be unsanitary is humiliating. It is also humiliating for a prisoner to ask a guard or officer for necessities. The guards have more power than the prisoners, and the guards will often rile up or pester the prisoner because the inmate asked for something.
In an institution where people are supposed to be rehabilitated or otherwise become better people, forcing women to go without the proper amount of pads does nothing to help with the healing process. Sign this petition and tell Speaker of the House John Boehner that female prisoners in America should have access to the proper amount of pads and tampons when they are on their menstrual cycle.
Dear Speaker of the House John Boehner,
Female prisoners in America are being humiliated on a monthly basis. Correctional facilities don’t hand out the proper amount of pads to female prisoners, forcing them to go without or pay out of pocket. Those who cannot afford more pads often walk around with blood-soaked pants. Those that can have to abandon the use of toothpaste or other necessary commodities. This does nothing to help with the rehabilitation of the prisoners.
I implore you to craft a law that requires prisoners to give women the proper amount of pads when they are on their menstrual cycle. This amount may differ from woman to woman. This is a huge issue for female prisoners, as this is not just an issue of sanitation, but one of human rights. By denying women access to pads and tampons, the rehabilitation system is failing inmates.
