Target: Ms. Carly Fiorina, Republican Presidential Candidate
Goal: Do not incorrectly use the title feminist while not supporting women’s rights.
A new player in the gameshow that has become the Republican Party’s nomination for president is calling herself a feminist, while still opposing some of the main tenants of feminism. The candidate, Carly Fiorina, is attempting to use the word and movement of feminism for her own personal gain. Something must be done to either stop her from appropriating the word or convince her to bring her ideals in-line with a truer definition of feminism.
The term feminist has become politically loaded over the course of the last few decades. Many, incorrectly, believe it to be all about hating men and fighting against them to make gains. In reality, feminism is meant only to bring women to a place where not only do they have equal standing and opportunities as men, but equal treatment by culture and society as well. How, then, can Ms. Fiorina deem herself a feminist?
Fiorina does not support equal pay for women, she does not support subsidized birth control, she does not support paid maternity leave, and she does not support a woman’s right to choose. Those four are tenants of the feminist movement, things that absolutely must exist in order for society in the United States to even approach parity. It appears that she has just called herself someone who cares about women to win votes, with very little idea of what she’s talking about.
Blatant lying and mischaracterization of an entire movement is unacceptable. One would expect no less from a prospective candidate for the presidency, but nevertheless she must be stopped. After all, what kind of feminist uses a movement of women trying to empower themselves for her own gain? Sign here to demand Ms. Fiorina either cease calling herself a feminist or bring her views in-line with what feminism truly is.
Dear Ms. Fiorina,
It has come to my attention that you are running for the Republican nomination for President of the United States. I understand that you have also labeled yourself a feminist. I am writing to take issue with your labeling, as it seems you have simply appropriated an entire movement that seeks to empower women for your own personal and political gain. This is evident in that you do not support equal pay for women, do not support subsidizing birth control, do not support paid maternity leave, and most upsettingly, do not support a woman’s right to choose.
It is hard for me to understand what you see in yourself that even resembles feminism, as those four things to which you are opposed are of the utmost importance in creating equality. Women and men have different needs, and until all of women’s needs are met in the way that men’s are, there will always be inequality. I am writing to demand that you either cease calling yourself a feminist or bring your ideals in-line with what feminism truly is. After all, what kind of feminist would use a women’s movement for her own enrichment and gain?
