Target: Dr. Michelle McCord, Superintendent of the Frenship Independent School District
Goal: Thank school district for taking swift action and dismissing a teacher who sympathized with racial segregation.
America was on the right track with its old system of racial segregation and shouldn’t have gotten rid of it, according to remarks reportedly made by Wolfforth, Texas fourth grade teacher Karen Fitzgibbons. Thank the leadership of the Frenship Independent School District for doing the right thing and firing this racist teacher from its school.
In response to the uproar surrounding video of a 14-year-old black girl being brutally tackled by a white police officer in McKinney, Texas, and the officer’s subsequent resignation from the city’s police force, Bennett Elementary School teacher Fitzgibbons took it upon herself to express her frustrations with the incident on her Facebook page. What she said, however, produced an uproar of its own.
“I’m going to just go ahead and say it… the blacks are the ones causing the problems and this ‘racial tension.’ I guess that’s what happens when you flunk out of school and have no education,” Fitzgibbons is reported to have written. “I’m almost to the point of wanting them all segregated on one side of town so they can hurt each other and leave the innocent people alone. Maybe the 50s and 60s were really on to something.”
Needless to say, these comments elicited widespread condemnation and demands for her immediate firing from Bennett Elementary School. Fortunately, the Frenship Independent School District launched an investigation, found her responsible, and promptly dismissed her.
People with such shamelessly bigoted attitudes should not be teaching the next generation. Sign the petition below to thank the Frenship Independent School District leadership for doing the right thing and getting this apparent racist off of its staff.
Dear Superintendent McCord,
I am writing you today about Karen Fitzgibbons and the disgusting comments she apparently made on Facebook for all the world to see. I wanted to take the time to thank you for taking such swift action against her and her racism.
Too often, people in positions of power and authority are given a free pass when they say things that are blatantly bigoted and contribute to a culture of systemic oppressive violence. Many teachers unfortunately fall into this category and are allowed to keep teaching even after they unintentionally or otherwise display their true colors of hatred.
Thanks to you and the rest of the Frenship Independent School District leadership, that has not happened in this case. A person who apparently possesses racist views toward black people will no longer be able to educate the next generation in your district.
This is a profound victory, and one that is not seen enough—if other schools held their teachers to the high standards you hold yours to, this country would be much better off. Thank you for doing the right thing and firing Fitzgibbons from Bennett Elementary School.
