Target: James Harrison
Goal: Thank James Harrison for donating his rare blood that has saved the lives of over two million babies.
For the past 60 years, Australian James Harrison has donated his rare, life-saving blood once a week, resulting in over 1,100 donations. Harrison’s blood is so valuable because it carries a rare antibody that was used to create a vaccine for Rhesus disease. This disease is extremely dangerous and it affects up to 17 percent of pregnant women in Australia. Rhesus disease occurs when antibodies in a pregnant woman’s blood destroys the baby’s blood cells. Unfortunately, this can lead to miscarriages and often babies will be born with brain damage.
Before a vaccine for Rhesus disease was created using Harrison’s blood in 1967, thousands of babies died each year. However, now that there is a vaccine, the Australian Red Cross Blood Service estimates that due to Harrison’s blood, the lives of over two million babies have been saved. What is remarkable about this situation is that Harrison does not like needles and has never watched the nurses put the needle in his arm. He “can’t stand the sight of blood. [He] can’t stand pain.”
Harrison has saved the lives of 2 million babies and deserves to be recognized for his bravery and dedication to a future in which Rhesus disease can be treated. Sign this petition to show your gratitude and support to James Harrison.
Dear James Harrison,
I am writing this letter to you to thank you for your dedication in ensuring that there is a vaccine for Rhesus disease by making over 1,100 blood donations in 60 years. You have made incredible sacrifices to create the vaccine and I commend you on being so selfless. You have given up your time, your energy, copious amounts of blood, and have endured pain for millions of children you will never meet.
You have saved over two million babies’ lives but you have affected millions more as families can now bring their babies home from the hospital as healthy as can be. These families can now have a future with their children, and it really is because of you. I thank you for all you have done, and I feel that people should look to you as an example of how to lead a truly altruistic life.
I hope you realize how important you are to all of Australia and babies all around the world that have benefited from the vaccine. Once again, I commend you for your actions.
