Target: Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter
Goal: Praise the Pentagon for adding sexual orientation to the Defense Department’s equal opportunity policy.
The Pentagon will be including sexual orientation to the Defense Department’s equal opportunity policy according to an announcement made by Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter. This is a huge victory for the LGBT community that has long fought for sexual orientation discrimination to be treated like discrimination by race, religion, and other factors.
At an LGBT Pride Month event, Carter stated that the Defense Department has “completed the process for updating its military equal opportunity policy to include sexual orientation, ensuring the department, like the rest of the federal government, treats discrimination based on race, religion, color, sex, age, and national origin.” Carter also stated that discrimination of any kind has no place in the military.
Carter was adamant that the Pentagon has taken action to provide benefits for same-sex spouses of service members, stating that the Pentagon remains “strongly committed to making sure all military families and spouses can fully and equally receive the benefits their loved ones have earned.”
Members of the military risk their lives every day to protect Americans from harm. It is their turn to be protected from discrimination and unfair policies. Sign this petition to thank Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter for acting in solidarity for LGBT service members.
Dear Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter,
I am writing this letter to you to thank you and the Pentagon officials for treating sexual orientation discrimination in the military the same as one would for discrimination by race and religion. While there is still a long way to go for the military to become fully inclusive of the LGBT community, including the fact that transgender members are still discriminated against, this new policy is a huge first step in making the military fully inclusive.
Members of the Armed Forces put their lives on the line to protect Americans and our ideals. Just as they protect us, we need to protect them from being discriminated against due to their sexual orientation. I applaud the Pentagon’s efforts for recognizing that their policy needed to be updated to protect members who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, etc.
As you move forward with this tremendous policy, please do not forget about transgender service members who are likely afraid to come out. Thank you for taking this first step to ensure equality by helping gay, lesbian, and bisexual service members who have been marginalized in the military for too long.
