Demand Costco Switch to Cage-Free Egg Suppliers

Target: Costco CEO, W. Craig Jelinek

Goal: Discontinue business with suppliers whose chickens are confined to cages.

Costco vowed to eventually discontinue business with suppliers keeping chickens confined to cages. Unfortunately, eight years later, Costco has still not implemented these changes. Urge Costco CEO Craig Jelinek to live up to these promises and discontinue enabling the poor treatment of animals.

The farm in question is Hillandale Farms located in Pennsylvania. They currently supply eggs to a Costco in Washington State under a particularly deceitful marketing campaign. The public is meant to think the eggs come from a neighboring farm where the chickens roam around freely.

Instead, the chickens are located in Pennsylvania and confined to unusually small cages. Recent video footage and reports confirm the awful conditions the animals are forced to live in. The tiny cages are neglected and the bodies of dead animals are often left to decay. This is an unacceptable practice.

Costco is widely known for its excellent treatment of employees, decent living wages, and the commitment to doing business with suppliers whose animals live in ideal conditions. It has enjoyed an otherwise good reputation that demonstrates its concern and love for all living beings. This reputation must be upheld by following through on their promises. Please sign this petition to urge Costco CEO Craig Jelinek to discontinue doing business with a farm whose animals are forced to live in squalor.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Jelinek,

In general, I am impressed with Costco’s concern for employees, customers, and the animals that all contribute to a successful business. Many years ago, Costco vowed to cease business with suppliers who exhibit substandard conditions for farm animals. The public is still waiting for this change to occur. Please live up to your words and implement these vital changes.

The chickens at the Hillandale Farm are living in astonishingly poor conditions, forced to cohabitate with corpses. This is not acceptable and the public has expressed its disgust. Continuing business with Hillandale Farms is in direct opposition to Costco’s business platform in which all living beings are treated with care.

Costco has already implemented many positive changes, setting a good example for other businesses and suppliers to follow. This is the next step in that process. I urge you to implement these changes immediately and vow to find an alternate supplier whose animals are living in only the best conditions.

Sincerely,
