Target: Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter
Goal: End all use of live animal torture for military medical and surgical training.
Thousands of live animals every year are being shot, dismembered, and stabbed for the sake of military medical training. This is a cruel and unnecessary practice that cannot be allowed to go on. Demand that the military immediately end all live animal testing for its surgery and medical training.
“Live-tissue training” is a euphemism for intentionally harming animals for use in medical and surgical education. Unfortunately, the United States military is a big fan of this practice. For the sake of its “combat trauma training,” the military heartlessly shoots, stabs, dismembers, and otherwise maims live animals like pigs and goats and then asks its trainees to keep the animals alive—and in tremendous pain—for as long as possible.
A few years ago the military responded to public pressure and vowed to phase out this abusive form of medical training over time for certain types of medical education, and to its credit it has. The issue is that it is still being used for other types of military medical education, and as a result thousands of animals are still being subjected to unspeakable horrors every single year.
Animals do not deserve to be tortured, even for military medical training. Alternative training methods are available and yet our armed forces refuses to adopt them across the board. Sign the petition below to demand that the military immediately cease all use of live animals for its medical and surgical training.
Dear Secretary Carter,
I am writing you today regarding the use of live-tissue training in our armed forces. This practice is unjustifiable and must be put to a final end without delay.
Live-tissue training, in case you do not know, is a method of medical and surgical practice wherein perfectly healthy animals are mortally injured and then operated on by medical and surgical trainees who try to keep the animals alive for as long as possible before they inevitably die. These animals are shot, stabbed, dismembered, and otherwise tortured, and then forced to live on in agony for as long as possible.
To say this practice is inhumane would be an incredible understatement. Indeed, the military has already phased out its use in certain areas of medical training. Unfortunately, it continues to be used in other areas, including combat trauma training.
This animal torture has gone on too long—it is time for it to be phased out of the entirety of military medical and surgical training. I demand that you ban the use of all live-tissue training in all the our military’s medical training.
