Target: Robert T., Owner of Tempe Tavern
Goal: Stop alleged discrimination against transgender patrons at sports bar.
A transgender woman was denied service at a bar in Tempe, Arizona just because of her gender, according to reports. This kind of shameless discrimination cannot be tolerated. Demand that this bar immediately stop this alleged discrimination against transgender people.
With the ever-increasing profile of transgender people in the media and in mainstream culture, instances of deliberate and casual transphobia and transmisogyny are on the rise. One only needs to read the comment section of any article related to Caitlyn Jenner’s recent Vanity Fair cover shoot to bear witness to this intolerable reality.
Briana Sandy, a transgender woman, says she experienced a particularly remarkable example of this hate and bigotry recently when she was trying to watch the Belmont Stakes at a local sports bar called the Tempe Tavern. Sandy says that she felt fine and welcomed at first and that the bartender was initially kind to her, but that they returned moments later and told her “[w]e don’t serve your kind here.” She reports that she was then told by another man in the bar to leave.
Though the bar contends that Sandy was denied service not because of her gender but because they thought she was a prostitute, Sandy adamantly disagrees and is filing a formal complaint with the city of Tempe. Sign the petition below to demand that the Tempe Tavern immediately stop this apparent discrimination against its transgender customers.
I am writing you today regarding the incident that is alleged to have recently taken place at the Tempe Tavern regarding Briana Sandy. The discrimination that she is reporting she faced at the hands of your staff needs to be dealt with immediately.
Neither your nor Sandy’s narrative of this event paints your establishment in a positive light. If, for example, your staff truly did tell Sandy to leave because they thought she was a prostitute, as your bar’s spokesperson contends, then it begs the question of why Sandy herself was singled out for suspicion and forced to leave compared to any other patron.
On the other hand, if Sandy’s story is the truth of it and she was really denied service because of her gender, then your bar is responsible for shameless transmisogynistic discrimination. What’s more is that Tempe has local nondiscrimination ordinances on the books to protect members of the LGBT community, so you may be in violation of those laws.
Transgender people are people just like anyone else and deserve to be treated with the same dignity and respect as anyone else. I demand that you immediately stop this alleged discrimination against transgender customers at your bar.
