Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Require that anti-drunk driving mechanisms be equipped in all automobiles sold in the country.
Car technology that will prevent drivers from being able to start their cars if their blood alcohol content is at an unsafe level is only a few years away from being perfected to the point where it can become standard in vehicles. This technology could potentially save tens of thousands of lives. Demand that all cars sold in the United States be outfitted with this safety technology.
Drunk driving is a plague on our country. In 2013, there were 10,076 fatalities directly caused by drunk drivers, and an astonishing 290,000 injuries. To counter this epidemic, car engineers have been busy designing anti-drunk driving technologies that can be installed directly into cars to stop people who have been drinking irresponsibly from driving. Thankfully they are almost ready for showtime.
These engineers say that by 2020, cars will be able to have breathalyzers on their steering wheels and infrared technology on ignition buttons that will detect a driver’s blood alcohol content. If the levels are past the point where a person can safely drive, the car will not start, preventing potential car accidents and saving lives in the process.
Despite the fact that this technology will be good to go in 2020, the government has no plans to make it compulsory in all automobiles. There is no reason these safety systems should not be mandatory in every single car on the road. Sign the petition below to demand that President Obama require that all cars sold after 2020 be equipped with this anti-drunk driving technology.
Dear President Obama,
I am writing you today regarding drunk driving. As I’m sure you know, drunk driving causes thousands of American deaths every single year, and hundreds of thousands of injuries. This status quo is simply unacceptable.
Thankfully, researchers are developing anti-drunk driving car technology to combat this epidemic that they say will be ready to go by 2020. They say that by then, cars will be able to have breathalyzers and infrared laser blood alcohol content analysis built-in, which will prevent the car from being started at all if the driver is found to have a dangerous amount of alcohol in their system.
Just like how we required that cars sold in America be equipped with seat belts on the grounds of public safety, we should require that all cars sold in our country come with this anti-drunk driving technology as a standard. As it stands, however, the government has no plans to enforce any such mandatory regulation.
There is no sensible reason not to make sure that, in time, every single car on our roads has this technology. American lives depend on it. I demand that you require that all cars sold in our country after 2020 have this anti-drunk driving technology equipped.
