Women Raped in Conflict Zones Need Our Help

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Provide funding for abortions for women raped by ISIS and Boko Haram.

Thousands of women are being raped and forcibly impregnated by Boko Haram and ISIS soldiers, resulting in thousands of unwanted pregnancies. These women should not be forced into carrying these violent pregnancies to term. Demand that the United States furnish humanitarian funds to provide these survivors with access to safe abortions.

Boko Haram and ISIS have made a habit of using sexual violence as a weapon of war. Countless people have been raped by their soldiers, and countless women have been forced into marriages, repeatedly sexually assaulted, and tossed by the wayside. As a result, the issue of unwanted pregnancies that this organized sexual violence has produced in massive quantities has come raging to the fore in the regions ravaged by these terrorist groups.

The United States currently has a law in place prohibiting international funding from being used “to pay for the performance of abortion as a method of family planning.” A coalition of American religious leaders is arguing, however, that seeking abortion in the case of rape in conflict zones does not at all constitute “family planning,” and to suggest that it does would be offensive and heartless. As such, the group contends, our country is entirely free to provide financial aid to these regions to help provide access to safe abortions to these women, should they choose to pursue them.

We cannot allow ourselves to abandon these women to unsafe and possibly fatal non-medical abortions. Sign the petition below to demand that President Barack Obama immediately send funding to the areas impacted by ISIS and Boko Haram for the express purpose of providing access to safe and healthy abortions for these survivors.

Dear President Obama,

I am writing you today regarding the international blights that are ISIS and Boko Haram. I wanted to bring your attention to a facet of their reigns of violence and terror that too often gets ignored, however: the issue of sexual violence.

The soldiers of these organizations have systematically raped thousands of women across the Middle East and Africa. As a result, there are thousands of women pregnant from rape in these groups’ conflict zones. The crisis is so extreme that many of these communities’ governments are trying to legalize abortion in the case of rape so that these women can terminate their violent pregnancies if they wish to do so.

ISIS and Boko Haram are the product of centuries of American imperialism and intervention in the Middle East and Africa. As such, we have a moral obligation to help these women. The Helms Amendment prevents our country from furnishing international funds for “family-planning” abortions, but it does not prevent us from providing money for abortion access for the victims of rape.

This is an issue of clear right and clear wrong. We should help the people caught up in this violence however we can. I demand that you immediately issue an executive order providing funding for safe abortion access for the women subjected to ISIS and Boko Haram’s abuses, in accordance with your abilities as President.
