Target: Petco CEO James M. Myers

Goal: Praise Petco for taking responsibility for dog killed in dryer.

A dog who was allegedly killed by a negligent Petco groomer will receive some sense of justice; Petco has fired the employees responsible and has accepted their own responsibility for the incident. The dog passed away after it was left in a drying unit for too long.

The groomer allegedly put the dog in the heating unit before leaving the building. It’s likely that the two-year-old Golden Retriever, named Colby, suffered terribly in the heating chamber. According to an article in USA Today, Petco released the following statement: “We take full responsibility for what happened in Midlothian, and remain heartbroken over Colby’s untimely passing…”

Thanks to outcry from animal lovers everywhere, including members of the ForceChange community, Petco took swift action. The company launched an investigation and found that proper animal care protocols were not followed. This resulted in the firing of the employees who were responsible for the incident. In addition to launching a new campaign to ensure high safety standards at all Petco outlets nationwide, the company has also discontinued the use of the type of dryer that Colby died in.

Although it’s unfortunate that this tragic case ever played out, Petco’s reaction to the incident demonstrates their honesty and commitment to the animals that they serve. Sign this petition to let Petco CEO James M. Myers know that you approve of the decision to fire the employees involved and to praise him for the new emphasis on safety.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Myers,

I’m sure you are aware of the tragic incident that took place at a Petco in Virginia in which a dog was allegedly left in a heating chamber for an indefinite period of time. The Golden Retriever likely died from a heat stroke, and it later came to light that one of the employees allegedly put the dog in the drying chamber before leaving the building. I want you to know that I highly approve of the decision to let go of the employees involved, and I’d also like to praise you for removing the type of dryer that claimed Colby’s life from all Petco stores.

Although this incident was awful, I’m glad to see that it has prompted this kind of response. I would like to thank you for your swift attention on this important issue. It demonstrates Petco’s commitment to the safety of animals, and I hope that Colby’s death will continue to serve as a teachable moment for employees working at Petco stores around the nation.

Sincerely,
