Applaud Termination of Ride Service for Inebriated Politicians

Target: Senate member Kevin De Leon

Goal: Applaud decision to terminate late night ride service for members of the California Senate.

In the wake of several DUI’s among members of the California State Senate, Kevin De Leon came up with the idea to set aside taxpayer dollars to designate late night drivers specifically for drunken lawmakers. The backlash was instantaneous and the idea has since been put on hold. Thank Senate member Kevin De Leon for ultimately making the responsible decision to put taxpayer dollars to better use and hold lawmakers accountable for their own decisions.

Drinking and driving violations among politicians is nothing new; however, the idea of using the public’s money to designate drivers for lawmakers is simply ridiculous and does nothing to address the root of the problem. As any citizen should be, senate members must be held responsible for their own sobriety and for finding adequate transportation.

There are several easily accessible and affordable options for the public to find transportation after a late night of drinking. The same is true of lawmakers. They enjoy the same ridesharing services as anyone else, perhaps even more so because of their larger paychecks.

There is no logical reason to use taxpayer dollars to correct the mistakes of those already in a position of power. The same money could easily be used to correct a number of other issues in our society. Thank Kevin De Leon for correcting his mistake and putting an end to an irresponsible use of time and money.

Dear Mr. Leon,

I am pleased to take notice of your recent change of heart following the public’s strong opinions. Though the idea of designating late night sober drivers for lawmakers is rooted in good intentions, the execution was misguided at best. Thank you for making the decision to abruptly end the use of designated drivers for senate members.

In response to a significant number of DUI’s among politicians, it is clear something must change. This change, however, does not begin with using taxpayer dollars to designate drivers for those already in a position to easily access alternate transportation.

So many wonderful options are available to any inebriated individual ready to make the responsible decision to not get behind the wheel of a car. Uber, Lyft, and several other taxi services are readily available in all cities.

Again, thank you for ending plans to designate drivers for inebriated politicians.
