Target: Foster Farm CEO, Ron Foster
Goal: Thank one of the largest chicken producers for cutting back on their use of antibiotics for their consumers.
Chicken producer Foster Farms announced that it is bringing out two new lines of antibiotic-free chicken for major retailers in the United States. They are going to be under the labels “Foster Farms Certified Organic” chickens and “Foster Farms Simply Raised” chickens.
For years, there have been multiple outbreaks of foodborne illness occurring in which Salmonella organisms were found to be multi-drug resistant. In 2013, an outbreak of multi-drug resistant Salmonella sickened over 600 people in the United States. Foster Farms, a California-based poultry distributor, was the one responsible for that outbreak, but now they are the newest major chicken producer to cut back on the use of antibiotics.
The company has declared that it has already taken out antibiotics that are critical to human medicine from all of its chicken productions and is working to remove the use of all human antibiotics. They also state that they will continue to use animal-only antibiotics when needed. An independent inspector will ensure that the company sticks to their promises.
It appears that Foster Farms is following in the footsteps of other nationally known poultry companies such as Perdue Foods and Tyson Foods who have also gone antibiotic-free for their products in the last couple of years. This move makes Foster Farms the largest producers of USDA-certified organic and antibiotic-free chicken in the U.S.
Please sign this petition to praise the company for committing to responsible safety practices by eliminating the use of antibiotics.
