Target: Barnard College Board of Trustees
Goal: Congratulate Barnard College for accepting transgender women.
Starting in the fall semester of 2016 transgender women can enroll in the all-women’s school Barnard College. The Board of Trustees has recently approved a policy which states that “in recognition of our changing world and evolving understanding of gender identity, Barnard will consider for admission those applicants who consistently live and identify as women, regardless of the gender assigned to them at birth.”
In addition to accepting transgender women, the school is also allowing for students who plan to transition or are in the process of transitioning to become men to continue their studies and stay at Barnard College. With this historic vote, Barnard College President Debora Spar wrote that, “There was no question that Barnard must reaffirm its mission as a college for women. And there was little debate that trans women should be eligible for admission to Barnard.” With many women’s colleges such as Bryn Mawr College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, Mills College, and Wellesely College having policies similar to Barnard College already in place and with petitions like this one from the ForceChange community I am sure the board felt compelled to include transgender women into the school.
Transgender women deserve to be let into women’s colleges because they are women. Show your solidarity for the transgender community by congratulating Barnard College and setting a precedent that will foster the inclusivity of all women.
Dear Board of Trustees of Barnard College,
I am writing this letter to you to congratulate you on making the wonderful decision to approve a policy that extends admission to transgender women as well as letting women who are transitioning to become men to stay on campus. With approval of this policy, you are sending a message of solidarity, compassion, and understanding to the transgender community who as a whole, has experienced so much marginalization.
Unfortunately, transgender women, especially women of color, are often subjected to unimaginable violence. it is important that inclusive environments are available for them. It is important for them to know that they belong and are valued on college campuses. This is a huge victory for the transgender community. With this policy approved, society is one step closer in unlearning what it means to be a woman.
Thank you for choosing acceptance. Thank your for choosing love.
