Target: Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety
Goal: Don’t deport man back to a place where he will be killed for fleeing due to forced affiliation with Hamas.
The Canadian government may deport a 24-year-old gay Palestinian man back to the West Bank, where he believes he will be killed for fleeing his family and the Palestinian militant organization known as Hamas, as well as for admitting his sexual orientation.
John Calvin is seeking asylum in Canada, but the Canadian government is planning to deport him because he was or still is a member of Hamas and therefore cannot seek asylum in Canada. Calvin says he fled when he was 19-years-old because of the upbringing his pro-Hamas family provided him with and is fearful of being executed for fleeing if he is forced to return.
At first, Calvin was determined not to be a member of Hamas in an immigration hearing, but the Canadian government said that there was evidence that he was a member of the group and decided he would be deported November 4. After the decision was made, Calvin’s lawyers tried appealing the decision, but were denied without any explanation.
Calvin says that he began questioning the teachings of the Quran when he was 14, which caused tension in his family. After a breaking point with his family in 2005, he fled to Israel, where he was detained because he didn’t have proper documentation. During this time in prison, he was allegedly raped.
John Calvin has had a rough life and continues to be on the run from possible dangers. He is not guilty of his family’s crimes and only wishes to live a peaceful life in Edmonton, Canada. Please sign the petition below to urge the Canadian government to grant him asylum.
Dear Mr. Steve Blaney,
I am writing to you because of the recent decision to not grant asylum to John Calvin, a 24-year-old gay Palestinian.
As the Minister of Public Safety and the elected officer responsible for the Canadian Border Service Agency, it is your duty to ensure domestic security of Canada’s borders. John Calvin is only guilty of growing up in a family that treated him poorly and he fought hard to escape a life that he did not want any part of.
Calvin’s family is pro-Hamas, but Calvin began distancing himself from his family’s teachings at the age of 14. He has risked his life numerous times to try and escape from Palestine and has finally found a place to call home in Edmonton, Canada.
Please grant this young man asylum and allow him to live in Canada in peace. If he is deported, he will face the threat of death in Palestine.
