Stop Using Bibles as School Science Textbooks

Target: Bossier Parish School District President Glen Bullard

Goal: Cease using the Bible to teach creationism and “debunk” evolution in local schools.

Students in biology classes are being given Bibles and taught creationism, according to emails recently made public from the Bossier Parish School Board in Louisiana. Such lessons are in blatant violation of federal law. Demand that this religious bias stop being taught in the parish’s public schools.

According to a state law called the “Louisiana Science Education Act,” science teachers in public schools are permitted to bring supplemental texts into class to “critique” scientific theories. These emails suggest, however, that Bossier Parish teachers are going far beyond that.

One science teacher in the parish reportedly sent an email to her school’s principal explaining her lesson plan. “We will read in Genesis and them [sic] some supplemental material debunking various aspects of evolution,” the email read, “from which the students will present.” Other teachers echoed this religious educational ethic, saying that their jobs were to “present both evolution and creationism” and even to “probably break the law” and “pray at school functions.”

Regardless of whatever laws the state of Louisiana has on the books, there is still a federal law outlawing lessons on creationism, and this parish’s schools certainly seem to be violating it. Sign the petition below to demand that the Bossier Parish School Board immediately stop its schools from teaching creationism as science.

Dear President Bullard,

I am writing you today regarding the emails that were recently released by Slate from the schools in your district. As I’m sure you know, these emails pertain to the teaching of creationism in your schools’ science classes alongside evolution. This needs to be addressed at once.

I understand that your state has a law in place that allows public school educators to bring in outside material to critique established scientific fact. The content of these emails, however, shows that your teachers have been regularly exceeding the limits of this law and have moved from providing critique of evolution into actually teaching creationism itself. This is unfortunate, because doing so is against the law.

Lessons on creationism are still banned by the federal government, which supersedes your state law. Even if teachers think that what they are providing students is nothing more than critique, these email correspondences suggest that they are, in the course of those critiques, crossing into actively advocating creationism. I demand that you immediately stop the schools in Bossier Parish from teaching creationism as science.
