Reinstate Funding for Abandoned Chimpanzees

Target: President and Chief Executive Officer of New York Blood Center Christopher Hillyer

Goal: Reinstate funding for 66 abandoned Liberian chimpanzees.

Sixty-six chimpanzees in Liberia, Africa have been allegedly abandoned by the New York Blood Center. The NYBC has used these chimpanzees for decades for medical research, including infecting them with hepatitis viruses. Once finished, the administration allegedly decided they no longer needed the animals and released them into the wild on an island near the laboratory. This organization has assets worth $450 million dollars as well as major corporate partners. Despite this wealth, the NYBC has withdrawn all funding that would have provided the chimpanzees care for life.

These animals desperately need this funding. They have been confined to a laboratory for many years and therefore do not have the necessary skills to survive in the wild. These chimpanzees have been essentially left for dead. Without the funding that was promised to them, it is extremely likely that these chimpanzees will die of dehydration and starvation.

After years of being infected with viruses for medical research, these chimpanzees deserve to live freely with funding from the NYBC so that they can live comfortably. Sign this petition to help reinstate funding for these helpless creatures.

Dear Christopher Hillyer,

While I have deep respect for your work at the New York Blood Center, I am disappointed that the center has allegedly removed funding that would provide the sixty-six chimpanzees released into the wild with care for life. I am writing this petition to urge that you reinstate this funding.

After years of being subjected to medical research and testing, these animals deserve to be taken care of by the same institution that infected them with hepatitis viruses in hopes that it will benefit people in the future. I believe it is your ethical and moral obligation to protect these chimpanzees from the slow and painful death that awaits them if they are not provided with care. To not reinstate funding would be to essentially leave these animals for dead. They do not know how to survive in the wild after being in captivity for their whole lives.

I urge you to make the right ethical decision to take care of the animals that have given so much to the New York Blood Center. Please reinstate the finding that would set up the chimpanzees with lifetime care.
