Target: Actor Matt Dillon
Goal: Thank celebrity for visiting Myanmar and raising awareness of increasing persecution against Muslim religious minority.
What many are calling a burgeoning genocide in Myanmar against the Rohingya Muslim minority has been called to global attention by Hollywood actor Matt Dillon. The more light that can be shown on this humanitarian crisis, the better. Thank Dillon for using his status to help this attacked community.
The Rohingya Muslim minority in Myanmar has come under increasing persecution in recent years from the country’s Buddhist majority. Radical monks, saying that the minority is outbreeding the Buddhist majority and seeking to overtake the country, have fanned societal hate against this minority to create violence. Hundreds of Rohingya Muslims have already been slaughtered and hundreds of thousands more are displaced and living as refugees in makeshift camps.
At the behest of Rohingya activist Thun Khin who put forth an appeal for increased attention towards this crisis at a Washington, D.C. conference recently, Dillon decided to visit Myanmar and see the situation firsthand. “There are people working here, people who know a hell of a lot more about it than I do,” Dillon said to media as he talked with Rohingya refugees and survivors. “But listen, if I can use my voice to draw attention to something, where I see people suffering, I’ll do that any day of the week.”
For some reason this worsening crisis is not garnering the sort of international attention that it deserves, so every effort to increase its profile should be appreciated and encouraged. Sign the petition below to thank Matt Dillon for calling attention to this burgeoning genocide.
Dear Mr. Dillon,
I am writing you today regarding your recent visit to Myanmar. I wanted to take the time to express my gratitude to you for using your high-profile status as a celebrity to bring much-needed international attention to this crisis.
As I’m sure you know, the situation in Myanmar is quickly deteriorating. Rohingya Muslims have already been massacred by machete-wielding monks, and they are dying in refugee camps and in desperate attempts to escape the country. What is being fostered in the country is nothing less than the groundwork for an ethnic cleansing and genocide.
Clearly, the more attention that can be brought to this tinderbox, the better. The international community needs to know about this situation before it can help resolve it.
With that in mind, I thank you for using your fame to shine a spotlight on this crisis. With any luck, it will help this attacked minority from being subjected to continued violence, persecution, and genocide.
