Justice for Dog Left to Burn to Death in Heated Cage

Target: Alfred Durham, Chief of Police, Richmond Police Department

Goal: Investigate claims of a family pet burned to death by a negligent groomer.

A family pet was recently killed by a negligent dog groomer. The dog, a two-year-old golden retriever named Colby, was allegedly left in a heated drying cage by a groomer who left the building to attend a graduation ceremony. When owner Allison Marks did not hear from a Petco grooming center for several hours after she dropped her dog off, she called the store. She was told to meet the store’s assistant manager at a nearby animal hospital, where she discovered that her dog had died while in the custody of the grooming center.

A necropsy found that the dog died of heat stroke, and the veterinarian conducting the examination reported that the dog’s temperature registered at 105 degrees even an hour after death. Despite corporate Petco assurances that the drying cages are set to shut off after 15 minutes, the dog’s high temperature suggested that he was left in the heated cage for much longer. It is likely that the dog endured significant pain and suffering before his death.

When a dog owner leaves their pet with a groomer, it is expected that the dog will be handled in a careful and attentive manner. The shocking lack of professionalism displayed by the groomer resulted in the tragic loss of a member of the Marks family, and should not go unpunished. Sign the petition below to demand a police investigation into this display of cruelty and negligence.

Dear Chief Alfred Durham,

A two-year-old golden retriever recently died after allegedly being left in a heated drying cage by a Petco groomer. The dog, named Colby, was dropped off by owner Allison Marks, who called the center hours later after she had not yet been called to pick up her dog. She was told to meet the store’s manager at a local animal hospital, where she discovered that her dog had died of heat stroke.

Trapped in a heated cage, Colby endured significant pain and suffering before his death. Had the groomer been more careful and attentive, this situation could have been avoided entirely. This negligence and lack of professionalism resulted in the death of an innocent family pet, and should not go unpunished. We, the undersigned, demand an investigation into Colby’s death while in Petco custody.

  1. If Petco can’t hire responsible people then they should not be allowed to have a pet grooming business.
