Praise Beijing’s Ban on Smoking Indoors

Target: Beijing Mayor, Wang Anshun

Goal: Praise ban on smoking in or around public facilities in Beijing.

China’s capital, Beijing, better known as the largest tobacco consumer in the world, has made great progress in decreasing tobacco use and secondhand smoke. The capital officially banned smoking indoors to include: offices, all forms of public transportation, and restaurants. Smoking within a certain distance of hospitals and schools will also be found in violation. Thank Beijing for implementing a policy that will significantly decrease secondhand smoke and contribute to a healthier capital.

Much of the world already has strict laws in place regarding when and where citizens may smoke cigarettes. Such policies are shown to decrease tobacco use and, more importantly, create a safe space for those who do not wish to inhale cigarette smoke.

Those found in violation of this policy will receive a fine, while repeat offenders will have their name placed on a government list for a short period of time. Many other steps are being taken to influence the public to eliminate tobacco use. Cigarettes will no longer be sold within 100 meters of schools and brightly colored banners have been posted around the capital displaying anti-smoking slogans.

Please sign this petition to thank the city of Beijing for all it is doing to combat tobacco use and improve the health of citizens.

Dear Mayor Anshun,

China has undoubtedly developed a reputation regarding heavy tobacco use and weak laws to discourage such use. Beijing has recently turned a corner regarding tobacco use and the pressing issue of secondhand smoke. With new laws in place to eliminate smoking indoors and around schools and hospitals, Beijing can only benefit. Thank you for working to create a safer capital for all citizens by banning smoking in and around various establishments.

Anyone in violation of these new laws will receive what I believe to be adequate punishment. More importantly, plenty is being done to discourage tobacco use and influence the younger generation to steer clear of its harmful effects. This is extremely important.

The capital has even gone as far as to place various anti-smoking ads around the city, sure to catch the attention of all who pass by. All that is being done is in the spirit of eliminating tobacco use and promoting a healthy lifestyle for all. I commend the measures being taken and hope Beijing will continue to protect its citizens.
