Target: Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner
Goal: Automatically register all people to vote when they sign up for driver’s licenses.
Tens of thousands of American citizens could be automatically registered to vote when they get a driver’s license in Illinois if a proposal working its way through the state legislature becomes law. This would be a huge boon to democracy going into the presidential election of 2016 and beyond. Demand that this proposal be signed into law.
Automatic voter registration at the DMV may seem like a minor change, but it could have an immense impact on Illinois’ number of voters. Similar automatic registration methods of organ donor programs, for example, have found that assuming consent and giving people the option of opting out of donation, instead of just giving people the option of opting in, increases the number of people who choose to donate by at least 80 percent.
There are currently around 2 million people in Illinois eligible to vote but who have not registered. Experts estimate that setting up a system of automatic voter registration will immediately increase voter turnout in 2016 by a factor of one to two percent. In hard numbers that is at least 100,000 people, most of which would be young people and those from low-income households.
That alone is a worthwhile increase in voter turnout, but the expected increase in the long term—when generations of young Illinoisans who go to get a driver’s license are registered to vote at the same time—makes adopting automatic registration a no-brainer. Sign the petition below to demand that Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner do just that.
Dear Governor Rauner,
I am writing you today regarding SB 2134, a bill that in all likelihood will arrive on your desk in the very near future. This proposal would automatically register Illinoisans to vote when they get driver’s licenses at the DMV and should be adopted without delay.
Americans should relish every opportunity to foster democracy in our country that we get. Your state jumped at such a chance recently when it began allowing people to register to vote on election days. Senate Bill 2134 would give you the opportunity to make such a positive move again.
By adopting this automatic registration system, experts predict that your state will increase its voter turnout by at least 100,000 people in 2016. That is 100,000 people whose voices would otherwise not be heard.
We Americans have a duty to make it as easy as possible for democracy to be carried out in our country, and SB 2134 would do just that. I demand that you sign this bill into law when it arrives on your desk so that democracy can continue to flourish in Illinois.
