Target: Tunisian Government
Goal: Prosecute the police who allegedly tortured and raped women and men.
Tunisia’s revolution 4 years ago has led to a new democratic government that varies considerably from the two dictatorships that ruled the country for the 60 years before the revolution. Allegedly, the corrupt police forces tortured thousands of people throughout those 60 years and used intimidation and threats to keep them quiet. Now, with the help of the country’s Truth and Dignity Commission, victims of abuse are finally able to tell their stories.
The victims allegedly suffered horrendous abuse by the country’s police. While most of the victims who are now speaking out are men, thousands of women have come forward saying that the police raped them with batons, hung them upside down naked, and kicked them. One woman says she was kicked in the stomach while she was 3 months pregnant leading to a miscarriage.
Urge the Tunisian government to identify and prosecute police that were responsible for these heinous crimes.
Dear Tunisian Authorities,
Your country’s Truth and Dignity Commission has uncovered thousands of stories of horrendous, unspeakable crimes allegedly carried out by police during the regimes of Habib Bourguiba and Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali. The victims accuse the police of horrible torture; rape, electrocution, beatings, and waterboarding to name a few. Many of these victims are reportedly still suffering psychologically and have never been able to live a normal life.
We the undersigned urge you to punish the police to the fullest extent of the law if they are found guilty of these abuses in the upcoming hearing.
