Target: Rabbi Yissachar Dov Rokeach, Belzer spiritual leader in Israel
Goal: Abolish sexist ban on mothers driving their children to school.
An increasing number of women are driving their children to school in Stamford Hill in North London. This has brought the rabbis of Belz Hasidim, an ultra-Orthodox Jewish group, to issue a controversial declaration banning women from driving their kids to school. This absurd, sexist declaration must be abolished and the women affected by the ban should be apologized to, to prevent prejudices from ensuing in the community.
The ban was recommended by Rabbi Yissachar Dov Rokeach, the Belzer spiritual leader in Israel. The rabbis behind the ban believe that the act of women driving their kids to school creates great resentment within the Hasidic community and institutions. The rabbis ground their legitimacy for the ban in the belief that driving for women is shameful, and breaches the sense of modesty in women in the Hasidic community.
The ban is to be enforced at the beginning of the summer. As outlined in the ban, if women continue to drive their kids to school, they will be turned away from the school gates and banned from academic institutions. This ban not only heightens inequality between men and women, but also threatens the affected children’s education.
Please sign the petition below to urge the rabbis of Belz Hasidim to abolish the ban on women driving their kids to school, and to apologize to the affected women. Such ridiculous bans have no place in modern-day society, and only create tensions in communities.
Dear Rabbi Yissachar Dov Rokeach,
The news of the rabbis of Belz Hasidim issuing a ban on driving for women has come as quite a shock. Banning women from driving their kids to school creates numerous problems, and the insistence that it is immodest for women to drive is simply ludicrous. Women have as much right to drive as men do. Placing this ban would create hardships for women who need to drive their kids to school, as well as elevate social inequality issues between men and women in the community of North London. Furthermore, as many mothers have expressed their disregard for the ban, affected children may be denied education by schools adhering to this ban.
Therefore, this ban simply has no place in society. Please urge the rabbis in North London to abolish the ban and to apologize to the women who are affected by this ban.
