Target: Mr. Jon Ritzheimer, “Draw Muhammad” Contest Organizer
Goal: Do not hold offensive “draw Muhammad” event outside of Islamic community center.
In an extremely tone-deaf response to the violence caused by a recent “draw Muhammad” contest, a foolish man has decided to hold another in Arizona. He claims that this contest is a peaceful protest and that it is all about free speech, but it is very clear that his intention is to stir up controversy and bash Islam. Something must be done to prevent this event from taking place, not because it could incite violence of some kind or because it’s illegal, but because it’s just hateful and unnecessary.
This ridiculous event has a facebook page that bears such messages as: “Death to Islam! No coexistence,” and encourages people to, “utilize their Second Amendment right at this event just in case our First Amendment right comes under the much anticipated attack.” Clearly the claims about this protest being peaceful were spurious at best.
The president of the community center outside which this event is planned to take place has reacted with aplomb. He has said that everyone has a right to speak their minds, regardless of how racist or bigoted they may be. He went on to say that members of his community center had been encouraged to ignore the “protesters” and attend all services as normal.
Regardless of this calm reaction on the part of the community center, this event cannot be allowed to take place. True, its organizers and supporters have a right to speak their minds, but why do they need to be so offensive? What they’re doing is not technically illegal, but it’s in disgustingly poor taste and shows them to be classless and bigoted. Please sign here to demand this even be canceled as soon as possible.
Dear Mr. Ritzheimer,
I understand that you are the organizer of another “draw Muhammad” contest to take place outside of an Islamic community center in Arizona. My only question to you is: why? Why do you feel it necessary to spread such a hateful message and view of the world? I understand that you are not breaking any laws with your proposed protest, but you seem to have confused your right to free speech with a right to hate.
There are violent extremists in every religion, Mr. Ritzheimer, just look at yourself. You have encouraged people attending your “peaceful protest” to bring guns “just in case our first amendment right comes under the much anticipated attack.” Why would you do something that could provoke such an attack? Your freedom of speech is not a freedom to incite violence.
I am writing to beg you not to hold this event. It is counterproductive and only adds more hatred, and possible violence, to the world. Yes, you have every right to do this, but stop and ask yourself if you really should.
