Target: Andrea Bastani Archibald, Girl Scouts USA Chief Girl Expert
Goal: Praise Girl Scouts USA for welcoming trans girls to serve.
Amidst the controversy surrounding LGBT membership in Boy Scouts USA, anti-LGBT groups have tirelessly targeted partner organization Girl Scouts USA, prompting the organization to crack down on its trans-inclusive stance. However, Girl Scouts USA Chief Girl Expert, Andrea Archibald, has refused to cave to the pressure, maintaining that the organization has, and always will, welcome trans girls to serve.
Following an anti-trans petition, which had more than 38,000 signatures, claiming that the institution would be extending membership to ‘boys who identify as girls,’ calling trans girls ‘boys in skirts,’ Girl Scouts USA’s Chief Girl Expert issued a laudable statement clarifying the organization’s intent to ‘serve all girls.’
Further, anti-trans and anti-LGBT groups have targeted organizations like Girl Scouts USA repeatedly, wrongly equating transgender people with sexual predators and ignorantly claiming that the presence of trans youths would put non-trans youths at risk. Rejecting these debunked fears and refusing to dignify anti-trans and anti-LGBT group scare tactics, Archibald went on to reiterate that the organization has long welcomed trans girls to serve in the organization, since 2011 in fact, and has tirelessly stated that scouting is ‘for all girls.’
From a Denver-based Girl Scouts USA troop welcoming a 7-year-old transgender girl into its ranks back in 2011, to issuing laudable statements supporting the induction of trans girls into the organization, Girl Scouts USA has proven that it is an institution committed to supporting the LGBT community and respecting the autonomies of trans girls and women.
Sign the petition to applaud Girl Scouts USA Chief Girl Expert, Andrea Archibald, for her admirable support of transgender girls and women serving in the institution, and thank Girl Scouts USA for being LGBT advocates.
Dear Ms. Archibald,
It has recently come to my attention that Girl Scouts USA, recently under fire by anti-trans and anti-LGBT groups for welcoming trans girls and women to serve in the institution, will continue to support the induction of trans girls and women across the country. Since 2011, Girl Scouts USA has recognized that there is no one way, or no right way, to be a girl and advocates for the trans community, and the larger LGBT community, by rejecting prejudice and showing apathy towards ignorance. In short, these values deserve to be applauded, including your admirable statements.
Amidst transphobic arguments, ridiculous petitions and bigoted statements from anti-LGBT groups, Girl Scouts USA continues to stand strongly in favor of its pro-LGBT values, granting access to membership to LGBT youths. Every day, trans girls are especially at risk for verbal and physical harassment and public spaces and enriching programs, like Girl Scouts USA, are seen as off limits. As a result, trans girls constantly feel isolated and view their existences as nuisances.
Organizations like Girl Scouts USA are imperative to teaching trans girls, and other LGBT youths, that their autonomies are not only respectable but attainable. Thank you for continuing to allow trans girls to serve with Girl Scouts USA, and thank you for your wonderfully insightful and supportive press statements advocating for trans girl visibility and the LGBT community at large.
